It was noon, and the glaring sunlight filled every corner of Zhangwei Village. Looking around, there was a scene full of vitality.  The smoke from the chimneys of the village houses curled up, and the air was filled with a mouth-watering smell.

In the west end of the village, in the thatched kitchen of a family, an old man was smoking a dry cigarette and staring intently at the old woman who was busy in front of the stove.

Dang bang, clang, the old woman held a long iron spatula and quickly turned over the green pepper and eggplant shreds in the pot.

    "Old man, add some fire."

The old man quickly extinguished the cigarette, knocked the cigarette rod vigorously on the sole of his shoe, then walked a few steps to the stove and squatted down. His left hand pulled the bellows 1 twice, and his right hand skillfully pulled the bellows from behind.  I grabbed a handful of dried corn cobs and stuffed them into the firewood pile.  Whirling, whirring, as the bellows twitched back and forth, the fire burned more and more fiercely.

"Okay, I'll put the vegetables in the pot, cook some rice porridge, steam some white flour buns and we'll start dinner."

¡°Steam two more steamed buns and I¡¯ll send them to Fang¡¯er and his wife later.¡± The old man dropped the bellows, grabbed the cigarette rod and stood up.

    "What? What did you say?"

"I told you to give some to Fang'er and the other two, they are so pitiful." The old man took out the match from his waist and rubbed it. With a squeaking sound, the matchstick was lit.

Just as the old man put the flame into the smoke pot, the old woman snatched it away, threw it on the ground and stepped on it.

    "What are you doing?"

"What am I doing? Lao Zhang, Lao Zhang, I really can't see that you have so many tricks up your sleeve. You are a widow with a baby, and you think about giving food and clothes to people every day. I think you feel sorry for them, right?"  The old woman slammed the iron basin in her hand onto the pot table.

"You crazy woman, what are you shouting for?"

"Okay, Lao Zhang, I wash and cook for you every day, and now you call me a crazy woman for an outsider."

"How much are two steamed buns worth? Have you eaten a piece of your flesh?"

"Yes, a meal is not worth much. Don't you remember how many times you have gone to deliver it? I will call my son now and ask him to comment on whether he can survive this day!"

The old woman just wanted to rush out, but the old man blocked her back with her body.

"What? The settlement was wrong? What on earth do you have with that widow?"

"You, you can only farm in this life."

"Hey, are you still reasonable? Don't stop me, I'll call now."

"You have such a bad temper, you will fall out at any time."

    "you¡ª¡ª"

"Don't make any noise," the old man seemed to have made a great compromise and didn't want to argue anymore. He pulled the old woman aside, quietly stretched his head out of the door, looked around mysteriously, and deliberately lowered his voice, "Go into the main room and say.  "

"What did you say when you entered the house?"

"You'll know when you enter the house." The old man grabbed her wrist and dragged her into the main room.

"What on earth are you going to say?"

"I'm telling you, Fang'er is dying."

"What? What did you say? Isn't she only in her 30s?"

"When I went to deliver meals to the couple a few days ago, I heard what Fang'er said herself. She said it was some kind of complication. She didn't have money to treat it, so she could only wait to die."

    "real?"

    "How can it be fake?"

"She's almost dead, why are you giving her food?" the old woman curled her lips.

"You are an old woman who doesn't understand anything, yet you are still stubborn with me."

    "Then what do you mean?"

"Don't you think about it, aren't she and Qingsheng the only two people in Fang'er's family? Once Fang'er leaves, won't Qingsheng be an orphan?"

"What? Is it possible that you still want to adopt?"

"Raise it, why don't you raise it?"

"Dare! We only have so little space at home. The fourth child is about to be born. We don't even have money to raise a grandson. You still want to adopt someone else's child. Have you been kicked in the head by a donkey?" The old woman poked hard with her finger.  The old man's temple.

"Farming, farming, you know how to farm. I let you watch the tips on getting rich on TV every day. What have you learned?!"

"What happened to farming? Didn't I still support four children by farming?"

"Okay, okay, I won't argue with you, you are just thathow do you say that word"

The old woman no longer cared about arguing with the old man, and began to clear the tables and chairs in the room and prepare for dinner.

"Yes, short-sighted" The old man racked his brains and came up with an idiom."You're the rat, get out of here and I'll serve the food."

    "Don't worry, don't worry, I haven't finished talking yet!"

    "Then tell me quickly!"

"I'm telling you" The old man put his mouth to her ear.

    "Say it quickly!"

"I often go to deliver meals to Fang'er and his wife, and everyone in the village has seen it."

"Are you still shameless? Do you think you are honoring your ancestors by delivering food to a widow? You are not afraid of being poked in the back by your fellow villagers!"

"Keep your voice down!" The old man covered the old woman's mouth.

    "Uhuhuh"

The old man took advantage of this moment and said hurriedly: "The night before yesterday, I invited the village director to have a drink and told him that I wanted to adopt him to celebrate his birthday. He agreed as soon as he was drunk."

"Uhuhuh" When the old woman heard this, she scratched her hands in the air, and the noise in her mouth became louder and louder.

The old man didn¡¯t care how she bared her teeth, and continued: ¡°When Fang¡¯er dies, and I bring Qingsheng here, then who should own their homestead?¡±

The old woman¡¯s eyes suddenly lit up: ¡°Then it must belong to our family.¡±

"Do you think this is the truth: I deliver food to Fang'er every day, and everyone in the village knows that it is only natural that I adopt her to celebrate her birthday. No one in the village will say anything."

    "Yes, that's the truth."

"Our vegetable plot is connected to Fang'er's homestead. If we can get their homestead and tidy it up, the big yard can feed dozens of pigs."

    "Dozens, so many?"

"At that time, we will plant bitter herbs on both vegetable fields so that there will be feed for the pigs. Don't look at the child Qingsheng who is only six or seven years old. In the past few years, he has relied on him to pick up rags to support Fang'er. This child is very capable.  Work.¡±

"What do you mean" The old woman's face turned from cloudy to clear, and she looked at the old man with a smile.

"Yes, let's bring Qingsheng here. All we have to do is give him food every day and let him feed the pigs and do chores for us. Do you think it's worth it? This is fucking pie in the sky, and you're still trying to stop me.  .¡±

When the old woman heard this, she laughed so hard: "Old man, I've been with you for decades, but why haven't I noticed that there's so much bad water in your stomach?"

"You said this, who can think that money is hot to the touch?"

The old woman smiled without saying a word and pushed open the wooden door.

    "What are you doing?"

"I'll serve your grandson a meal!"

"This old lady!" The old man smiled and picked up the cigarette rod.

"My mother-in-law, please sit down and let's have a chat. Mother-in-law, please sit down. Let's just pull it" The old man held the rice bowl in his left hand and hummed a classic aria from the Henan Opera "Chaoyanggou".  He gestured in the air and staggered out of the door.

¡°Have you had lunch?¡± The old man greeted the villagers chatting under the wall.

    "Eat, what are you doing?"

"Oh, I'm going to deliver a meal to Fang'er and the other two, they're so pitiful."

"How about everyone praise you for having a bodhisattva heart!" One of the villagers used a toothpick to pick the minced chives on his teeth and gave the old man a thumbs up.

"We are all in the same village. If we have a little more money here, we can help. Let's go."

    "Oh, let's go!"

As soon as the old man left, the villagers began to whisper among themselves.  How could this escape his ears?  Listening to the villagers' discussion, the old man felt something beautiful in his heart. This was exactly what he wanted.

His steps became lighter and lighter, and in just three or five puffs of dry smoke, he arrived in front of a courtyard at the south end of the village.

"Woof, woof, woof," the double red doors of the courtyard were ajar, and bursts of dog barking came from the courtyard.

"What's it called?" The old man opened the door.

"Woof, woof, woof," the big yellow dog in the yard was madly barking at the old man.

"Damn you!" The old man picked up a stone and threw it at the yellow dog, and screams suddenly came from the yard.

"Celebrate your birthday, Fang'er, I've brought you a meal." The old man stood in the yard, looked around, and shouted at the top of his lungs.

Seeing no one answered, the old man shouted twice more: "Celebrate your birthday! Celebrate your birthday!"

"This kid won't pick up rags again!"

He walked to the door and carefully pushed open the rickety wooden door: "Fang'er?"

The creaking sound of the door opening seemed so strange.

The glass of several windows on the wall has long been gone. In order to prevent drafts from entering the house, the places where the windows were originally installed were covered with thick newspapers.  So although the sun was shining brightly outside, it was dark inside.

"Fang'er!" The old man opened the door and walked into the house.

"What does it smell like?" He pinched his nose instinctively.

As the door was completely pushed open, the slanted beam of light shone on the only earth bed in the house.

He was so shocked that he sat down on the ground, his legs shaking uncontrollably.
