    "How do you know her?"

"During the snowstorm of 2008, I met her by chance in the service area. She was with Wang Shaofeng at the time, and I thought she was Wang Shaofeng's mistress."

    "and after?"

"I looked for an opportunity to follow Wang Shaofeng and found that he was only responsible for picking up Zhou Nan. Based on Wang Shaofeng's personal network, I speculated that Zhou Nan should be the mistress of one of the officials, so I have been asking informants to pay attention to Zhou Nan's whereabouts in the past few years.  "

Zhang Bowen fell into a brief silence.

On the night at the end of October, the temperature in this southern city still has not dropped significantly.  The air conditioner in the office hummed softly, and the incandescent lamps on the ceiling cast dim light.  He sat behind his desk, resting his elbows on the edge of the table, and his folded index fingers covered his mouth intentionally or unintentionally, not hiding his probing gaze at all.

He was examining Zhao Yichen who was standing quietly at the table.

"Why did you follow Wang Shaofeng in the first place?" Zhang Bowen asked him, staring closely into his eyes.

"He used to be my wife's mentor in the law firm." Zhao Yichen looked back into his eyes with an unchanging expression, and answered in an orderly manner, as if he was reporting on work that had nothing to do with him, "My wife disappeared in 2006, and Wang Shaofeng  During the investigation, he hinted to the investigators that he had had sex with my wife. I suspect that my wife¡¯s disappearance is related to him, and maybe we can find clues by following him.¡±

The thumb of his right hand unconsciously groped for the joint of his left thumb. Zhang Bowen looked at him intently and pondered for a moment.

When the two met, he had already become the captain of the criminal police. In order to facilitate front-line investigation work, he rarely wore a full police uniform.  Therefore, in Zhang Bowen's eyes, Zhao Yichen looked familiar at this moment: a tall and straight body like a copper wall, a long and narrow face with strong lines, and a pair of dark brown eyes under slightly raised thick eyebrows.  His hands were hanging by his sides, and he was still holding a light gray coat in his right hand. His face was calm, and his eyes were looking directly at Zhang Bowen.

Accustomed to pressure during interrogation, most criminal police officers will unconsciously let their words and deeds give others a sense of oppression even in their daily lives.  Zhao Yichen is no exception.

Even when he mentioned his own weaknesses, he never disarmed himself at all.

"Xiao Zhao, you have been the criminal police captain for three years and you are very clear about our work, so I won't beat around the bush." ??After a long while, Zhang Bowen finally spoke, "Before Xiao Wei came over to bring me a message for you,  We are dealing with Wang Yanyang's matter. In addition, you have followed Wang Shaofeng, and now I have enough reasons to believe that you have guessed who the target of our operation is." His eyes still did not leave the eyes of the man in front of him, and he refused to let go  His mood changed slightly, "But what I want to be clear about is whether you have any other purpose in providing us with clues about the key witness at this juncture."

Zhao Yichen looked as calm as ever.  From the moment he told Wei Xiang to take the message, he was ready.  He knew that with just the slightest carelessness, one wrong word could ruin his future and even threaten the personal safety of himself and his family.

"If I guess correctly, you plan to use Wang Yanyang's death to persuade Wang Shaofeng to become a key witness for the prosecution and provide secret protection to him and his family." After a moment of consideration, Zhao Yichen spoke calmly, with a calm tone as usual, "  Without evidence alone, it is imperative to find another witness besides Wang Shaofeng. As a people's policeman, I have the obligation to cooperate with the prosecutor." After a pause, he looked into Zhang Bowen's deep eyes and moved his lips slightly, "I have nothing else.  The purpose is just to have a chance to meet Wang Shaofeng."

Zhang Bowen¡¯s slightly moving thumb stopped.

    "For your wife's sake?"

    Zhao Yichen nodded.

Released his intertwined hands, Zhang Bowen leaned back on the chair, frowned, closed his mouth tightly and exhaled a long breath from his nose, raised his hand and touched his chin.

"Our people must be present," when he spoke again, he raised his eyes and looked at Zhao Yichen again, "and your conversation needs to be recorded in real time for evidence."

The implication is that he agreed to his request.

Zhao Yichen loosened his grip on the coat, lowered his eyes and lowered his head, "Thank you Zhang Jian."

When I left the procuratorate, it was already nine o'clock in the evening.

Zhao Yichen drove through the city and gradually detoured to the nearby old city.

Stopping the car at the bottom of Wu Lixia¡¯s residence, he turned to look at the floor where she lived, and could vaguely see the flickering blue light from the dimly lit window hole.  The old man is frugal, so he probably turned off the lights and was sitting in the living room watching TV.

Turning the key to turn off the car, Zhao Yichen raised his hand to open the car door, but suddenly remembered what Wu Lixia said after he cut off communication with Chen Zhi a few hours ago.

"That's it"; "When I entered the police academy, my sister was the most opposed to it. She has been worrying about me for most of her life." He used his other hand to touch her cheek buried in his pajamas, and his rough palm wiped away the almost dry skin for her.  Tears, "And you. You have to be in fear every day when you follow me, and you can't afford shoes that don't hit your feet, so you can't live a good life. There are not so many good things in the world. You can go the way you want without hurting the people around you."  .¡±

She kept her eyes closed from beginning to end, her eyelashes trembling slightly, but she still couldn't open her eyes, "It's different"

Seeing that she was so exhausted that she was unconscious, Zhao Yichen pulled the thin quilt over her, and Yingying said absently, "What's different?"

Unexpectedly, she moved a little, struggled with sleepiness, and murmured vaguely: "I am your wife, you are my husband I support you just like you support me no conditions  " At the end of the sentence, the pronunciation of the words was difficult to distinguish, and people fell into sleep.

Zhao Yichen kissed her hair, turned off the bedside lamp, and recalled her vague pronunciation in the dark.  After thinking for a long time, he finally pieced together what she had not said clearly at the end.

She said that as long as they were together, nothing else would be a problem.

With the cigarette butt between his lips, he took a deep breath.

The night wind flowed into the car window, swirling the night, and breaking through the curls of white smoke that escaped between his lips and teeth.  He raised his head and rested the back of his head on the pillow above the back of the chair.  Through the windshield, you can see a row of dark sycamore trees not far away.  The swaying shadows of the trees sometimes obscure the brightest morning star in the night sky.

Zhao Yichen once heard young people complain about the city¡¯s environment.

But they don¡¯t know that going further north, more cities won¡¯t even be able to see this lone star at night.

When he was a child, Zhao Yiqing often pointed to this star and told him that when his mother went to heaven, she would become the only and brightest star in the sky.  Zhao Yichen never believed it.

He blew out a smoke ring again.  The smoke filled the air, obscuring the flickering light in his field of vision.

"Jiaying." He heard his own voice.

Calm and determined.  As if waiting for someone's response.

    There was silence all around.

He then remembered the only play he had ever read, called "Waiting for Godot."

Nothing happened.  No one came, no one went.  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
