When Zhao Yichen reached out to open the cupboard, he felt the phone in his pocket vibrate.

Putting down the spatula and turning the heat on the stove to a minimum, he took out his cell phone and answered the call: "Brother-in-law."

"Have you received Ah Lei?" The hospital on the other end was very quiet, and Liu Zhiyuan's voice was carefully kept to a minimum.  Zhao Yichen found a packet of cornstarch from the cupboard, took it out and poured it into a bowl mixed with oyster sauce and cornstarch: "I got it, I'm cooking." He put the phone into the crook of his neck, picked up the bowl and mixed it with chopsticks.  of sauce, ¡°How is my sister?¡±

"I did an ultrasound and it was said that it was uterine fibroids and I might need surgery." Liu Zhiyuan tried to speak more simply, "She is still in severe pain and will stay in the hospital for observation tonight. I will stay with her here and you will be here tomorrow morning.  Send Ah Lei off, okay?"

Pour the sauce into the minced garlic in the pot with your backhand, Zhao Yichen frowned slightly, raised his hand to grab the cell phone in the hollow of his neck, and turned up the heat with one hand, "Is it serious?"

"It's not a big problem. Let's talk about it in detail tomorrow." The other party thought about it on the other end of the phone and added: "It's not an incurable disease in the first placeit's just that it's more difficult to operate."

Hearing the truth from his tone, Zhao Yichen raised his eyebrows and used a spatula to stir the sauce that was about to boil in the pot, "Okay, then you work hard tonight, I will send Ah Lei to the hospital tomorrow.  "

Liu Zhiyuan responded.  The sauce was just simmering when I hung up the phone.

Turning off the heat and pouring the sauce over the blanched lettuce, Zhao Yichen unplugged the rice cooker and turned around to take a bowl from the disinfecting cupboard when he caught a glimpse of two figures behind him.

After a pause, he glanced at them, then opened the sterilizing cupboard, the expression on his face did not change, "Why did you come out?"

Liu Lei held Zhao Xishan¡¯s hand and stared blankly at the back of his head, unable to react for a moment.  He had just come out of his room. He originally wanted to take the little girl with him to help serve the dishes, but he happened to hear Zhao Yichen calling.  The fragmented sentences seemed to be talking about Zhao Yiqing.

At this moment, he found three small bowls and three pairs of chopsticks. Zhao Yichen didn't even look at him, but already started serving rice.

"Dad called?" Liu Lei finally remembered to speak, feeling a little panicked, "What's wrong with Mom? They won't be back tonight?"

"Eat first." Zhao Yichen still didn't look back. He only filled three bowls of rice and told the little girl calmly: "Shanshan, take brother and sit down."

Zhao Xishan raised his head and looked at his brother.

Liu Lei became increasingly panicked and asked hurriedly: "Is mom seriously ill?"

Putting down the bowl in his hand, Zhao Yichen was silent for a moment.  Compared to Liu Zhiyuan, Liu Lei is more like Zhao Yiqing.  Thoughtful, but sometimes overly sensitive.  The couple always treated him as a child, so he lacked some independence and responsibility.  This is what Zhao Yichen is most dissatisfied with.

"Uterine fibroids. Your dad said it's not a serious problem, and you just need an operation. After dinner, you can search this disease online and learn more about it." He explained briefly and concisely. He picked up two bowls of rice and turned around to face Liu Lei.  His eyes narrowed and his eyebrows narrowed: "A man is about to become an adult. Don't scare yourself before you understand the problem."

His tone unconsciously became cold and harsh. Not only did Liu Lei shrink subconsciously, but even Zhao Xishan looked at him blankly after hearing this, looking timid and a little pitiful.

Zhao Yichen paused, but only said: "Go and serve the food."

Blushing, Liu Lei nodded casually, let go of the little girl and ran to the stove to serve the dishes.  The little girl was left standing stupidly between the kitchen and the dining table. She unconsciously put her hand to her mouth and bit her nails.

After putting down the rice bowl, Zhao Yichen turned back and walked up to her, carried her to the chair beside the dining table and sat down.

Zhao Xishan didn¡¯t eat much for dinner.

Since Zhao Yiqing was away, Zhao Yichen only wiped the little girl's arms and back at night, and then helped her get a basin of hot water to wash her feet without taking a bath.  It wasn't until he took a shower, lifted the quilt and lay on the bed that he noticed the little girl huddled in the bed, always scratching her arms from time to time.  Turning sideways to turn on the bedside light, Zhao Yichen put his elbows up on the pillow, pulled her thin arms, and smoothed up the loose sleeves.

The skin was dry and red, and she scratched it with thin red marks.

"Itchy?" He raised his eyes and asked her.

His broad shoulders blocked the light from the bedside lamp. The little girl lay on her side in the shadow, opening her big gray-brown eyes and nodded numbly.  A strand of soft hair slipped from her ear. He pushed it behind her ear for her, and then rubbed her little head: "Dad, go to my aunt's house to get lotion."

Wait for him to go upstairs and take care of Zhao Yiqing¡¯s houseAfter taking off the lotion, Zhao Xishan was already curled up on the other end with the light on, and fell asleep in a daze.  It's still the same position as a baby huddled in its mother's womb, with one small arm exposed outside the quilt, and the sleeves rolled up to the top of the elbow.

Zhao Yichen sat on the edge of the bed, gently pulled out her other arm, and applied lotion on her.  The little girl shrank her shoulders and opened her mouth slightly, but did not wake up.  The movements in his hands paused for a moment, and he looked up at her to make sure she was still asleep, then put her arms back on the quilt and looked at the bottle of lotion in his hand.

The main ingredients are glycerin and honey.  It was also the first time he noticed it.

As a man, he lives alone all year round, is busy at work, and leads a rough life. He doesn¡¯t even have body lotion at home.  If it weren't for the sister Zhao Yiqing living upstairs, I might not be able to take care of Zhao Xishan at all.

Turning his head to look at the sleeping face of the little girl, he pushed aside the long hair hanging on her neck, put the lotion on the bedside table, and turned off the light.  After lying down again, the little girl seemed to sense something and moved her thin body and shrank next to him.  Zhao Yichen hugged her sideways and closed his eyes in the darkness.

He was a light sleeper, so when Zhao Xishan climbed out of his arms in the middle of the night, he woke up immediately.

The curtains in the bedroom were drawn up leaving only a small gap, and a beam of dim light from a street lamp shone at the end of the bed.  Zhao Yichen felt the little girl in his arms move, then slowly tightened his body and crawled out of his arms.  He opened his eyes and didn't make a sound easily.

With the faint light, he watched the little girl get out of bed quietly, her little figure staggering, and walked to the closet in the dark.  After groping for a while, she opened the sliding door of the closet.  The clothes hangers in the closet collided lightly, making a slight sound.  She climbed in and closed the closet door again.

The room became quiet.  Quietly, as if there had never been any movement.

Zhao Yichen lay motionless on his side on the bed, looking at the sliding door of the closet in the dark, and didn't say anything for a long time.

About five minutes later, he got up, turned on the bedside lamp, put on his slippers, and came to the closet.  No movement could be heard behind the sliding door.  He opened the door and glanced across the rows of neatly hung clothes, landing on the little girl huddled at the bottom of the cabinet.  She held on to several black coats, hugged her knees tightly, tightened her shoulders, lowered her head, and rested her chin on her knees, just like the first time he saw her.

Hearing the sound of him opening the door, the little girl raised her head, her palm-sized face exposed to the light, and her dark eyes filled with water.  The moment she saw him clearly, her eyes turned red.  Hot tears overflowed and fell drop by drop.  But the little girl didn't wrinkle her face like last time, nor did she crawl out to hug him.  She just looked up at him in confusion, maintaining the curled up position, shedding tears, not moving or making a sound.

At that moment, Zhao Yichen suddenly understood that she was not waiting for him.

He knelt down, his eyes were level with hers, and looked at her without saying a word.  The light reflected his side face, and he saw his own shadow cast down, shrouding her small body in shadow.  He wanted to call her.  He wanted to ask her why she was hiding in the closet.  He wanted to touch her hair and comfort her.

    But he said nothing.

He reached out his hand and carried her out of the closet.

The little girl drank milk before going to bed, and she still had a faint milky fragrance.  The warm tears wet the hem of his clothes, but he didn't seem to notice. He just turned around and put her back on the bed, then lay next to her again and tucked her into bed.  She was still crying and gasping slightly, her hair sticking to her face and blocking her eyes.

Pushing the hair aside, Zhao Yichen gently pinched her cold little ears, put one hand around her back, and rubbed her back to calm her down.

After moving her head, the little girl shrank her legs and slowly curled up into a ball.  Her cold little feet were touching his belly, and even though they were separated by a layer of clothing, there was still a chill in them.

Zhao Yichen remembered Hu Jiaying¡¯s feet.  In winter, I always suffer from frostbite, which lasts from dark to dawn.

No matter how long he held it in his hands to warm it, it never got warm.

Originally I was going to do double updates today but I got stuck again t^t

The last two chapters are very important and difficult to write.  It's always difficult for me to write, and I'm worried that I won't be able to handle it well.

It¡¯s still an emotional issue, I¡¯ll adjust it again.

Chapter 13 is not finished yet.  It will be explained in the second half of the chapter that Shanshan hiding in the cabinet is related to Jiaying's death.

This is also the reason why Shanshan is speechless.

Will be updated tomorrow (remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
