Chapter 849 The Desire of the Rich and the Noble

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

In front of Minglun Hall, two hundred students listened to Hai Rui's deep lecture:

"Second, we cannot be 'blind to what is happening outside the window.' When reading and writing, we only seek sermons and ink scrolls. Even if we can write gorgeous and neat articles, it will not be of any benefit to our country's body and mind. This kind of people only know how to read and write.  Bookworms who are obsessed with reading are even more harmful to the country than the previous category of people!"

The students were secretly stunned. It was the first time they heard that nerds were more harmful to the country than corrupt officials.

But Li Zhi's eyes suddenly brightened. Hai Rui's view coincided with his own.

"This is unscientific, it must be a coincidence" Jealousy made Li Zhi lose his mind and he was unwilling to admit it.

"This is the request of this hospital that schools at all levels should vigorously encourage students to go out of school and learn more about social reality outside of books. Combined with people's livelihood issues such as farmland water conservancy, industry and commerce, use discussion methods to encourage students to speak out about world affairs, so as to improve  Students’ ability to analyze and solve practical problems!”

Hai Rui finally said: "This hospital would like to send you eight words, 'cultivate yourself internally and serve the people externally'. Learn skills well in school, and engage in world affairs after leaving school. Use the knowledge you have learned to solve practical problems for the people. Don't become a celebrity."  A useless person who talks empty words but doesn’t walk the talk!”

    ??~~

When Haizhong Cheng finished his lecture, Magistrate Cai respectfully asked Haigong to come up with a question to test the knowledge of the school students.

This is the proper meaning of the title, and Hai Rui readily agreed.

The scribe immediately brought up the writing desk, and Hai Rui took up his pen and wrote a line of large characters painted with silver hooks and iron.

‘The desire of rich and noble people’!

"Hiss" Seeing this title, everyone gasped.

No one expected that Hai Rui would ask such a question.

Doesn’t he hate the rich? Doesn’t he regard wealth as nothing more than floating clouds?  This is unscientific

After receiving the questions, the students returned to their classrooms and began racking their brains to write their essays.  Although Haizhong Cheng is not a censor, but if he can be appreciated by him, he will be famous all over the south of the Yangtze River, and he might even be able to participate in the autumn of the following year without taking the examination.

In front of Minglun Hall, Hai Rui said to Cai Guoxi, Li Zhi and others: "Let's not be idle anymore. We should also write an article and set an example for the students."

"I'll show my shame." Naturally, Cai Guoxi and others did not dare to refuse.

Everyone then entered the Minglun Hall, and the scribe quickly set up the tables for all the adults in the hall.

Hai Rui sat behind the big case without hesitation and started writing without thinking. It was obvious that he had already prepared the draft.

Cai Guoxi and others also hurriedly sat down, each of them more nervous than the students.

This is just an exercise for the students, but it is a test for them, and it is related to Master Zhongcheng’s opinion of them.

"If the views expressed are contrary to Zhongcheng's, then these three years will really be the same as being in jail.

The officials are all scholars, no matter how good they are, they are also old scholars, so they naturally know that this topic comes from "The Analects of Confucius: Li Ren Chapter".

“The Master said, wealth and honor are what people want, and if they don’t follow the right path to get them, they won’t be able to get them.  Poverty and lowliness are what people hate, and they cannot be obtained in the right way.  Don’t go either.  "

??Simply put, everyone wants to be rich and powerful, but if they cannot get it through legitimate channels, a gentleman cannot enjoy it in peace.  Everyone wants to get rid of poverty, but if he cannot get rid of poverty in the right way, a gentleman will not be safe.

Cai Guoxi thought about it and felt that this was the governor's trap. The topic he gave was "The Desire of the Rich and the Noble", but what he really wanted to express was the second half of the sentence, "If you don't get it by the way, you won't get it."

It means to severely crack down on plundering and getting something for nothing.

The more Magistrate Cai thought about it, the more he felt that he was right.  He was a well-educated and famous official in Neo-Confucianism. He finalized his ideas and soon came up with a stern statement to attack the local tyrants and evil gentry.

Putting down his pen, Magistrate Cai gently rubbed his wrist, thinking that he would be able to leave a good impression on Zhong Cheng this time, right?

Beside him, Niu Qianshi was still biting his pen with a sad face.  The result of Niu Qianshi's review was the same as that of Magistrate Cai, but his bottom was dirty and he didn't have the confidence to shout and kill, so the article was naturally difficult to produce.

    ??~~

In the room, Li Zhi also finished writing his article. He looked up at the big case and saw that Hai Rui had already put down his pen and was sitting upright, looking at him.

"Has Professor Li finished writing?" Hai Rui asked calmly.

"What's so difficult about this?" Li Zhi chuckled.

"Bring it up and let us read it for you." Hai Rui waved slightly.

"Yes." Li Zhi took the still-undried article as a major case, then glanced at Hai Rui's article and asked with a smile, "Can I also read Zhong Cheng's masterpiece?"

"Why not?" Hai Rui nodded, picked up his article, and signaledLi Zhi took away his own.

The two of them sat next to the big case and read each other's articles.

Unlike Cai Guoxi, Li Zhi did not beat around the bush to cater to Hai Rui.

Instead, he focused on the "desires of rich and noble people", generously defended personal selfish desires, and criticized Zhu Xi's "destroy human desires and preserve natural principles" without mercy.

He said, "Privateness is the human heart."  People must be selfish, and then their hearts will be seen; if they are selfless, they will have no heart.  ’

He believes that selfishness is human nature, and it is selfish nature that makes people pursue progress.

For example, farmers work hard just to produce more food and satisfy their appetites; the industrial and commercial classes work hard to produce more products just to satisfy their selfish desires; scholars work hard to satisfy their selfish desires of promotion and wealth.  Study hard.

Therefore, Li Zhi put forward the view that "human desire is the law of nature."

In addition to flogging the old man he hated most, Li Zhi also did not forget to provoke Hai Rui, whom he envied and hated.

In the article, he also said that "Heaven has made peace with the world," which elevated the exchange relationship between people, that is, commercial transactions, to a level that is consistent with heaven's principles.

So what should the government do?  Li Zhi put forward the political proposition that "the best way is no action, the best governance is silent, and the best teaching is silent".  It is believed that the reason why the country often experiences turmoil is that the rulers interfere too much in social and economic activities.

He hoped that the court and government would only maintain national peace and social stability, and would have no or less interference in the economic life of the society.  If everyone is assured of the freedom to act in his own way, then people's nature to pursue wealth and trade freely will establish a self-regulated, harmonious and long-lasting social and economic order.

That is to say, 'because the government does not change its customs, and follows its nature without disturbing its abilities', this is his ideal 'governance by the perfect person'.

    ??~~

Hai Rui was stunned for a moment after reading Li Zhi's article. He didn't expect that such a Taoist magistrate Cai would tolerate such a deviant madman as his principal.

Hai Rui was not too angry about Li Zhi's suggestion of "ruling by the best" and insinuating that as a governor, he should not disturb the normal local economic order.

"Because once he came, he, the dignified governor, would not be angry with the principal of the prefecture.  Secondly, Li Zhi’s thoughts are quite similar to those of his spiritual teacher Qiu Jun.

However, unlike Qiu Jun, who fundamentally rejects the traditional idea of ??"emphasis on agriculture and suppresses commerce" and advocates equal emphasis on agriculture and commerce, Hai Rui is not so radical. He believes that it should still be "agriculture-based, with industry and commerce as a supplement."

ps. Hai Rui’s views on education and this article "The Desires of the Rich and the Noble" were both written by him. After reading them, they will refresh your views.  How have the sea fighters been smeared? Is this a distortion of human nature or a loss of morals?  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
