    ??

    2000.

Lizigou Village on the outskirts of city a.

The days in winter are always extremely short, and the setting sun seems to be afraid of the coldness of the twelfth lunar month and disappears in a hurry in the western sky.  The sunset only lasted a moment. When the migrant workers returned to their rental houses in groups, it was already completely dark.  When the night breeze blows, pedestrians on the road all wrap themselves up in cotton-padded down jackets.

"Did the landlord come to your house yesterday to collect rent?"

    "No. I'll come today."

"It's really strange. I've lived in his house for three years. In the past, the landlord always kept a tight schedule, rain or shine, and would come here every month, but he never missed it."

Someone said with a smile, "Maybe the landlord is kind and exempts us for a month."

    "It's okay, stop dreaming!"

    Snapped.

Lin Wanzhao turned on the kitchen light.

Liu Aiguo squinted because of the sudden light in the room. He took off his furry cotton hat and threw it on the sofa near the window. "It's still early. Why are you turning on the lights right now? It's a waste of electricity."

"I went out to collect cabbage after lunch. Why did I delay it until now?" The place is not far from home, and I should have been back long ago.  Lin Wanzhao poured her husband a glass of warm water.

"The price of Chinese cabbage is good this year, and we grow a lot of it. I went to the field and met Boss Xu, who owns a restaurant. He wanted some, so I let him choose first. I brought back the rest, which is enough for us to eat throughout the winter.  Not finished.¡±

The Liu family is a farmer from Lizigou. The couple has five acres of land, and they usually don¡¯t bother to plant anything more than wheat and corn twice a year, plus some vegetables that are commonly eaten at home.  Two vegetables in winter, radish and cabbage.

Today, Liu Aiguo went to the fields to collect cabbages, brought them home and stored them, so that he would have enough vegetables for the winter.

Liu Aiguo took out the money from selling cabbage from his pocket and handed it to Lin Wanzhao, "Save it together with the rent."

Lin Wanzhao took it, and according to the past, it had to be placed in a tin box on the upper floor of the wardrobe.  The couple are both frugal and can earn five to six thousand a month in rent, but Liu Aiguo still only smokes dry cigarettes.  I can't bear to buy filtered cigarettes that cost two yuan a pack because they are too expensive.  Lin Wanzhao took out a hundred yuan from the money and handed it to Liu Aiguo, "Keep it for buying cigarettes."

"How much can I spend on cigarettes?"

"If we draw it in the future, it's not like we don't have money!"

Liu Aiguo smiled and took the pocket, "Why is the old lady so generous all of a sudden?"

Opening the cabinet door, Lin Wanzhao still put the remaining money in the tin box.

She was not suddenly generous, she had had such a strange and long dream.

Liu Aiguo rested in the house and went out to move cabbage.  Cabbage cannot be stored outside in winter, otherwise it will freeze and must be stored indoors, but it cannot be stored in a room that is too warm.  The house needs to be colder, and the cabbages should be stacked one by one and covered with quilts to store them all winter long.

In the past, when people lived in poverty, Chinese cabbage was the best winter vegetable for northerners.

The Liu family is actually not poor anymore. Their four children all work in City A, have their own houses, and live their own lives.  The old couple is used to living a frugal life. Even if they are no longer poor, they still have old ideas that they can't get rid of.

It¡¯s impossible to choose good vegetables when buying food in a restaurant. The cabbages Liu Aiguo brought back were all good, big, plump and strong.  During the day, Lin Wanzhao cleaned out the room where the cabbage was kept, the room where the third son and his wife returned home.  Liu Aiguo held Baicai in his arms and said, "The third daughter-in-law is the most particular. Baicai is left in their room and he won't even complain when his wife comes."

"I'm not sure whether I'll come or not. The house has been rented out this year, so where can I put this spare room?" Lin Wanzhao took the cabbage from his hand and placed it in the corner of the sofa near the window.  As she remembered in her dream, none of her daughters-in-law had come back this year, and the house was completely empty!

Even when I come back, this is my mother¡¯s house, I can put it wherever I like!

Liu Aiguo moved the cabbage into the house, and Lin Wanzhao picked a firm and juicy one and carried it to the kitchen, preparing to add some vinegary cabbage.

Chop off the cabbage heads with one knife, leaving only the cabbage ends.  Cabbage heads are very tender, but thick cabbage heads are used to make vinegar cabbage for the best flavor.  The blade of the knife sank obliquely into the thick cabbage, and a clear watery aroma of the vegetable burst out. This is an aroma that can only be found in Chinese cabbage after frost.

Cut the cabbage into thin slices with a diagonal knife and soak in a drain basin.

Bundles of green onions are placed in the corner of the kitchen. This is also a must-have in winter. Lin Wanzhao went over and pulled out one, and then pulled the head of garlic from the garlic braid. The onions and garlic are indispensable for northern cooking.

Liu Aiguo's loud voice came in, "Huh? It's so expensive! Oh, it's really amazing Isn't this just going to kindergarten? It's more expensive than going to college"

Lin Wanzhao¡¯s temples were beating. She had never wanted to believe that the weird dream was true, but Liu Aiguo¡¯s next words seemed to take her back to that long dream:

&I!  I didn¡¯t even get half of my parents¡¯ house. Dad gave me half a million, but he gave you one million!  You have both money and a house. Why didn't anyone ask me to share it equally with you? Now you have to share the medical expenses equally with me. It's a shame you can say it out loud!  "

The cold air seems to seep into the skin and bone marrow from all directions, and seems to spread outward from the apex of the heart, chilling the heart.  Lin Wanzhao was lying on the bed, her weak body without any strength, but her mind was still clear, and she was not ashamed, angry or sad. Such luxurious feelings had disappeared in her later years of more than 20 years.  She thought silently: God, let me die!

I really want to die early, I would rather die immediately than listen to the nonsense of filial sons and grandsons.

It¡¯s not that my heart is cold, my heart is already cold.

    Yes, it¡¯s too annoying.

The tired eyes slowly closed, and the sober mind gradually blurred.

When I opened my eyes again, it was as if I was still in a dream. The date on the calendar was clear: December 26, 2000.

? Below the solar calendar date is a line of lunar calendar dates:

The first day of the twelfth lunar month.

This is the first day of the twelfth lunar month in the second thousand years.

What appears in the mirror is gray hair, smooth wrinkles, and even a little morning blush on the cheeks.  When I stood up and walked, my body was no longer so heavy that I couldn't lift any strength. I just wanted to lie on the bed.  The joints are no longer like tools decayed by time, too tough and fragile to be used with force.  Outside the window is the old yard where she has lived most of her life. The unpicked persimmons on the high branches of the old persimmon tree in the yard are like small red lanterns. In the light golden sunlight of the morning, a few sparrows are chirping and pecking.

Am I in a dream, or are you seeing me in a dream?

"I have experienced such a real death, and have spent such a long and numb old age. So, what is the current situation, for an old man who has lived past the age of 80, it is not surprising.

The next moment, Lin Wanzhao pinched himself hard, it hurt.

?? Okay, as long as I make sure that I am truly alive at this moment, that is enough.

Lin Wanzhao opened the window and took a deep breath of the cold air of the winter of 2000. She felt refreshed and energetic as never before.

    ps:

Definition of the term: Month cards were something people bought in rural areas in the old days to tell the date. Wall calendars were also popular in the past.
