In August 2004, Zhao Yichen and Hu Jiaying moved into their first house.

When they received their marriage certificate, they did not hold a banquet because of financial constraints.  Later, Zhao Yichen was too busy with work, so the wedding was postponed.  This year when the house was being renovated, he once had time to help her paint. He squatted at the foot of the wall with a brush in his hand, and suddenly said: "On the day we move in, we will have a table with wine. We will make up for the wedding."

Hu Jiaying is holding the coffee table with both hands, bending down to check whether it is standing firmly.  When Leng Buding heard what he said, she was stunned and turned to look at him: "Are you talking to me?"

With his eyes still fixed on the wall in front of him, he shook his head seriously, as if he was still focused on the work at hand, "No, I'm talking to the wall."

    ? Then Hu Jiaying laughed.

But when it came time to move into the new house, the wedding didn’t happen.  Zhao Yichen received a call from Wu Zhengliang in the middle of the night the first day, saying that an undercover agent assigned by the Ministry of Public Security to a certain criminal group had contacted the city bureau and wanted to mobilize all police forces to round up a few ringleaders.  He lifted up the thin blanket and got out of bed, bumping his forehead against the cattail leaf fan in Hu Jiaying's hand without making a sound.

There was a power outage in the community, and she was afraid that he would be hot at night. Seeing that he was so tired that he fell asleep when he got home, she lay next to him and fanned him with a cattail leaf fan, closing her eyes and taking a nap.  When he answered the phone, she was in a daze, only waving the fan in her hand without stopping. Only then was she awakened by his sudden movement.

“You want to call the police?”

"Yes." He grabbed the clothes on the bedside in the dark and put them on, turning to look at her while buttoning them, "Maybe you won't be able to come back tomorrow, you"

"It's okay, just push it back." Interrupting him, her dark figure moved, as if crawling out of bed, "Be careful."

The situation was urgent, and he had no time to explain to her any more, so he just said: "Have a good rest." Before he finished speaking, he had already rushed out of the room.

Zhao Yichen was gone for five days.  When it was still daytime when he returned home, he first went to the small bungalow they rented, opened the door and found that the house was empty, and then he remembered that he had moved.  He had no choice but to go back to his new house with a heavy head, put a brand new key on the key chain and opened the door.  At that time, Hu Jiaying was still working in a law firm. The house was clean and warm, but quiet, which seemed strange.

He was hungry and tired. He went to the kitchen and wanted to make something to eat. He found a pot of chicken soup warming on the stove on one side and a pot on the other side. The pot was filled with water and noodles wrapped in paper were placed aside.  A handful of noodles that had been slightly pulled out were revealed at the mouth of the bowl.  So he cooked a bowl of noodles, and when he opened the lid and smelled the delicious aroma of chicken soup, his hanging heart finally settled down.

After that, Zhao Yichen slept for a whole day.  The reason I woke up at night was because I felt a cool hand grasping my foot.

He opened his eyes and tilted his neck to take a look, and saw Hu Jiaying sitting at the end of the bed, putting his left foot on his lap, grabbing his toes and trimming his nails.  He bent his legs and tried to pull his feet back, but she quickly grabbed them back with quick eyes and hands.  Seeing her raise her head and glare at him, he was a little amused: "I didn't wash my feet."

Hu Jiaying ignored him, lowered her head again, and carefully cut off his outrageous nails with scissors.

Knowing that she must have seen the holes in his socks, Zhao Yichen said nothing more.  He tilted his head and looked at her without saying a word, suddenly realizing that it had been a long time since he had taken a good look at her.  She had a plain face, lowered her eyes, and held his dirty and smelly feet in her hands.  The dim light above her head hit her face, and was held up by her dark eyelashes, casting a shadow under her eyes.  She probably couldn't see clearly in such dim light.  So she was very attentive and cut off his extra nails bit by bit.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? In fact, Hu Jiaying is not pretty.  In addition, she was so tired from working in the past few years that she was so thin that she almost lost her shape.  Even without makeup, her face is sallow.  But she rarely puts on makeup when she is at home.

Zhao Yichen looked at her, looking at the woman who had gone through the most difficult years with him, and felt his throat tightening.

He never told her that he still thought she was beautiful.  Just as beautiful as she was when she was in college.

Even at first, in his eyes, the most beautiful thing about her was the way she smiled.  Now, even when I'm not smiling, I look the best.

Frowning slightly, she finally cut off the nail of Zhao Yichen's right little finger. Hu Jiaying raised her head and breathed a sigh of relief. Only by accident did she find that he had his hands behind his head and was still staring at her without blinking.  She probably thought he was asleep, but she was stunned, "What are you looking at with your eyes so wide? Why don't you want to sleep for a while?"

"I've slept enough." He took out his hand and supported the bed board and sat up. He endured the fatigue all over his body and leaned on it."But in the middle of the night when I was drowsily asleep and suddenly felt that you were back and got into the quilt, I felt again that you are still alive. It's so good. It's really good."

Putting the half-eaten buns back into the bowl, Zhao Yichen picked up the tray and put it on the bedside table with one hand, and then without saying a word, he put his arm around her shoulders.

For a moment they were silent, and no one looked at each other.  After a while, Hu Jiaying leaned over and leaned on his chest, "Are you angry?"

"Think about it carefully and don't be angry." He put his palm on her thin shoulder and said calmly, "After all, if a person is always hung by a little hope, it will be more painful than having no hope."

As a police officer, he knows this best.  He has seen too many eyes that are both desperate and full of hope. No matter how many years pass, hope can be ignited by a word and dimmed by a word.  That's why Wu Zhengliang told him that they should do their best to investigate every case at hand, but it was best not to make promises to the victims' families.  Because hope can make people live and it can also make people die.

But when he first heard Hu Jiaying’s words, Zhao Yichen’s mind went blank.  It never occurred to him that she would wish him dead, even for just a few moments.  Fortunately, after he really understood it, the first thing he thought of was that he used to go out on police duty at night, and when he got home, he would always see her curled up on the sofa and asleep.  She said she wanted to leave the light on for him, but was afraid that leaving it on all night would consume too much power, so she simply waited for him in the living room so she could turn on the light for him as soon as possible.

The back of Hu Jiaying's head, which was resting on his chest, moved slightly.

"I know you are a good policeman." She sniffed openly, and finally no longer had a nasal sound when she spoke, "But if you have a choice, try not to die, okay?"

Being brought back from his thoughts by her words, Zhao Yichen chuckled, "Didn't you just say that you hope I die?"

"If you were really dead, I might be relieved," she said, "but when I think about it carefully, it's really scary."

    "What's so scary?"

"It's scary to think that you won't walk around this room or call my name anymore." She lowered her eyes again and pinched the red candy wrappers. She still didn't raise her head to look at him, but slowly  , as if every word was laced with a sigh, he replied, "I may not be able to survive that kind of life. You see, I feel scared just thinking about it. How will I survive it if it really comes?"

He hugged her and suddenly fell silent.

"You have to get through the hard times." After a long time, he opened his lips and said, "Eat well, drink well, and sleep well. You can get through it."

She unscrewed the threaded wrapper of the wedding candy bit by bit, sighed, and tightened it in the opposite direction, "I doubt I can do it."

"You are so smart, I can't beat you."

    “What if?”

After being silent for a moment, he didn’t force it anymore: “Then just do your best.”

"Okay, I'll do my best." She nodded and agreed, but still lowered her head so that he couldn't see her expression, "Then you also promise me something."

He squeezed her shoulder gently and said, "Say."

“If I die before you, you must quickly find another wife.” After thinking about it, she added, “It’s best to find someone who treats you better than me.”

"You are so busy that you don't have time to take care of your own health. When I am here, I can still supervise you. When I am gone, who will supervise you? Your sister also has her own family and cannot take care of you all the time."  The hands holding the wedding candy dropped down, and Hu Jiaying lowered her eyelids and explained lightly, "So it's better for someone to accompany you."

After that, she didn’t hear him say anything for a long time.

When she moved her head to look at him, his hand on her shoulder suddenly moved again, and his broad palm covered her eyes, preventing her from seeing his face.

"What are you doing?" she asked him.

In the darkness, she felt him lower his head, his chin resting gently on the back of her head, and his lips resting on the top of her hair.

"Jiaying." She heard him call her, "I'm sorry."

There was a pool of salty water in his palm.

"You should do your best." She choked a little, "Okay?"

Zhao Yichen did not agree to her.  The wet feeling in his palms became more and more serious, but he couldn't say the word "good".

After waiting for too long, she endured it and had no choice but to say, "Why are my hands sweating so much?" The last syllable trembled, and the ending disappeared in a choked sob.

He turned over, tightened his arms and pulled her into his arms.

At that time, he thought, he couldn’t do it either.  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com)At this moment he thought, he couldn't do it either.  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
