In my father¡¯s last days, Li Xiu stayed with him.

That winter, it was very cold in Beijing, with heavy snow falling all winter long. Although the best ward in Furen Hospital was warm, well-equipped, and brighter and more spacious than the ward I lived in in City C, it could not open fire.  We cooked in the family building of the hospital, and it took five minutes to walk to my dad's ward to deliver meals. Li Xiu was so small, wearing a white down jacket, like a dumpling, and refused to be hugged. He held my hand and took care of himself.  Walk freely in the snow.

Li Zhurong often goes with us. When he is away, we ask Li Chang to follow us. When he is there, it is him. Li Xiu changes from an arrogant little tiger to a well-behaved cat in front of him. He holds Li Xiu in one hand,  The other hand is holding my shoulder. In winter, he often wears a dark gray windbreaker. There is a faint smell of cigarette smoke on his clothes. As the Chinese New Year is approaching, there are many things in the company. He runs in both directions. Others would always be a little tired, but he always  He is always cold and determined, and except for calling his subordinates more often than before, he is no different from usual.

My mother lived with my father. Although she hired two caregivers, the old lady couldn't sleep every night. She sat on the bedside and watched my father until late at night.

I tried to persuade her, but she looked at my dad with a desolate expression and said to me: "We are a husband and wife for the rest of our lives I will be the only one left in the future."

She told me about her and my dad back then, saying that she was seven years younger than my dad, that she had good hair and big braids, and that many male teachers in school liked her.  My father was a physics teacher at that time. He was tall, thin, fair, and always lowered his eyes when he came to get food, not daring to look at her.  Later, the students at the school rebelled, beat the teacher, and smashed my father's head. When she heard the news, she was so anxious that she couldn't sleep all night, and she was too embarrassed to see him.  As a result, the next day, my father came to the cafeteria to prepare food again. His head was wrapped in gauze, but it was still white and clean. He lowered his eyes and did not dare to look at her.  She didn't dare to look at my dad because she knew that the student hit my dad with a blackboard eraser wrapped in iron. He cried all night and his eyes were swollen like peaches.

She said she knew my dad liked her.  There are more than 20 windows in the cafeteria, and my dad just stared at her window and worked for four years.  She used to cook spicy food, and my dad would sit in the corner of the cafeteria to eat it after he cooked it. It was so spicy that he stuck out his tongue. The next meal he would come to cook her food, rain or shine.  My dad doesn't know how to cook, so he also eats in the cafeteria during holidays. He sits alone in the corner with a thin back.  At that time, she thought that if she could marry her, she would cook for him every day and make him live a good life.

She said that she stopped cooking spicy dishes after that. There was only one time when someone arranged a blind date for my dad. She was so angry that she put a big spoonful of chili powder into the dish, which turned the cabbage red.  My dad ate it and came to get food again the next day. He had his eyes lowered and was angry. There was a pimple on his forehead, which was bright red. At that time, she looked at my dad and thought: This person likes me.  .

She has been waiting for my dad. It was early to get married at that time, and many people asked her for blind dates, but she refused to nod.  Waiting and waiting, until she was almost an old girl, my dad finally came.

She said that my dad is a clumsy person who keeps everything in his heart, even when he is angry and distressed.  When we first got married, she was impatient and quarreled with my dad. My dad couldn't speak and his face turned pale with anger, but he couldn't curse.  She saw my dad shaking with anger and was reluctant to say anything.

She said that over the years, my father had worked hard and was as thin as a bamboo pole. She had always thought that when he retired, she would retire too, cook for him every day, force him to eat, and raise him to be a fat old man.  She said that she would also teach my dad how to play mahjong and poker. When he was too old to move or read, she would sit with him, bask in the sun, and listen to the opera

She said that couples always think they will end.  But I never thought that my whole life would be gone so quickly-

After winter, my dad's condition suddenly worsened, with vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. He lost weight overnight and lost his shape. When I gave my dad a bath, I could clearly count his ribs one by one.  He had chest pain and couldn't sleep all night. In early October, he started to whimper in pain as fluid accumulated in his abdomen and the cancer spread.  I never dared to stay in his ward any longer - he was afraid that I would worry, so he always gritted his teeth and endured in front of me. He only dared to call out when I left. I lay on the door and listened, because of the tumor.  Suppressed, his voice was completely hoarse by then, and he was wailing one after another. I knelt outside the door and listened, and my heart felt like it was being fried in boiling oil.

I started taking opiates on October 14th, but the Chinese medicine still didn¡¯t stop. My dad began to lose energy. The pain was a little better, but sometimes he started to doze off while talking. The doctor said it was a side effect of the medicine.

There are also good times. In those days in November, the sun came out in Beijing and everything was warm. I helped him go downstairs to bask in the sun. Li Xiu was also there. My mother was sitting on the bench knitting a sweater. Li Xiu  Fly with a modelThe machine ran circles on the lawn and made a "woohoo" sound. He suddenly laughed and said, "You also liked to play with these things when you were a child."

    I don¡¯t even remember it.

I only remember that I broke my wrist once and went to the hospital to see a doctor. The pain was severe. He didn¡¯t know how to comfort me. He only remembered that I loved ice cream, but my mother refused to let me eat it.  So he secretly bought ice cream, hiding from my mother, and took me to the backyard of the hospital to eat it. It was the middle of summer, and he was covered in sweat. He sat there and watched me eating ice cream with the same smile.

I only heard my mother say that when I was teething, I would put everything in my mouth and chew up the small globe he bought until it was full of tooth marks. He was not even angry.  His teeth didn't grow properly, so he rarely smiled since he was a child, fearing that I would inherit his fault. When my teeth grew in or changed, he would always stare at me nervously.

He is such a good person, and has never done anything bad in his life. He was hospitalized in Beijing, and his student came back from abroad to see him. He gave me money outside the ward. He has the same personality as him and can't say a word of comfort.  Will say: "Take good care, ah, take good care"

So many people are reluctant to let him die.

When he started to fall into coma, Li Xiu also knew that he didn't have much time left, so he refused to go home and stayed in the hospital. When he woke up, he would talk to him.  He liked Li Xiu very much and kept telling me: "Teach him from now on."

Until the end, he thought Li Xiu wanted to be a physicist-

November 21st is not even the New Year. After talking with the doctor, my mother said that we should celebrate the New Year early this year.

It snowed heavily that night. Li Zhurong rushed back in the evening. My mother and I prepared the New Year's Eve dinner. Li Xiu talked with him in the living room. After a while, he ran to the kitchen and said to us: "Grandpa said,  smell good."

In fact, he couldn¡¯t eat anything. He was as skinny as a stick, his cheeks were sunken, and his eyes couldn¡¯t see clearly.

After the dishes were placed and everyone sat on the table, when my mother went to bring the last stew, he suddenly stretched out his hand and moved the bowl of braised fish towards me.

He will always remember that I like to eat fish-

After dinner, Li Xiu saw that the atmosphere was heavy and was making a fuss about setting off fireworks. Li Zhurong went to direct Li Chang to set off the fireworks, and Li Xiu also followed. My parents and I stayed by the window and watched.  In the dark sky, a large brilliant flower suddenly bloomed.  The brilliant light made him look much better.

He suddenly said: "Do you still remember the Chinese New Year that year?"

He was talking to my mother.

    My mother nodded.

He looked at my mother, suddenly lowered his eyes and laughed.

I don¡¯t know which Chinese New Year he is talking about.

Maybe it was when I was a child, wearing a cotton-padded jacket, holding a snowball, and running downstairs as if having fun. He was chasing after me nervously with his eyes on, but he accidentally fell and dropped his eyes.  He told me not to run away, while he was groping around in the snow, which made my mother laugh so hard.

Maybe it was the year I went to R University, and Professor Qian asked me if I wanted to join Group A. When I went home for the Chinese New Year, I told him about this. He was so happy that he drank, his ears were red, he had a bad temper, and he insisted on having sex with me.  We talked about what I had learned in class until we fell asleep on the sofa. My mother covered him with a blanket and pinched him in anger.

Maybe it was before I was born, when my mother was very young and he was also very young. Only the two of them remember the Chinese New Year of a certain year.

    Those were the best years.

If possible, I wish he could remain that simple physics professor all his life, without having to watch me get expelled from the school or experience the pain of cancer. I wish I could wait for him to get old and unable to walk, and I would help him bask in the sun.  Talk to him about my childhood-

On November 26, he stopped breathing.

    My mother cried a lot.

During the burial ceremony, I wiped his body. He was so thin, with only a few bones left. However, over the years, he has always been the person I relied on the most in my heart.  Sometimes when I think about him and my mother, I feel that things in this world are no big deal and I have to keep living.

    But he died.

On November 29th, I will send his ashes back to City C.

The home is still there.  I tidied up his study room. The books are still there, the desk is still there, the tea cup he likes to drink is still there, and his glasses are still there.

I always thought that he would suddenly come out of the study, holding a book, and ask me: "Look, does this place make sense"-

In early January, the institute conducted a census.

I habitually tick all the boxes for parents.

It was only later that I remembered that I no longer had a father.
