Zhang Xian became a platoon leader in the new barracks. Company Commander Zhang gave him five veterans and asked him to bring out fifty real soldiers within three months.  These newly trained recruits are all young people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five. Before they are assigned to the barracks, they only have one unified name, called strong men.

Speaking of strong men, we have to mention the conscription law in those tragic years.  At the beginning of the Republic of China, the country implemented a recruitment system. However, due to the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the supply of soldiers suddenly became tense, so the Nationalist Government changed the recruitment law to a military conscription law.  The Military Conscription Law stipulates that all young people of appropriate age who have reached the age of 18 are called "strong men" and must fulfill their obligation to perform military service, which is called "conscripts."  The Conscription Law also stipulates that if there are three young adults in a household, one must be selected to serve as a soldier, and if there are five young adults in a family, two must be selected to serve in the army.  Ding draws two."  Before recruiting soldiers, the division-controlled area first determines the quota based on the county's population and distributes it to the county; the county Military Service Section organizes local leaders to establish a "Recruit Recruitment Committee" to study the allocation of recruit quotas.  The operational procedures for conscription are generally carried out by the town mayor and the head of the baojia first checking and registering the "young men" of suitable age in the township and the bao. Each bao set up a "lottery committee" to verify the young men of suitable age based on the household registers, and conduct "lotteries" regularly.  ".  All young men who win the lottery must report to the township office within three days, and will be led by the township team to the county for a physical examination. Of course, the examination here is a formality. After passing the examination, they will be transferred to the division management area by the county standing team or directly picked up by the army.

The township team and the town team and the Baoli team in the townships are responsible for the specific work of recruiting young men.  The county has a military service department, which has a "Volunteer Standing Team" responsible for receiving and transporting young men.

The original intention of conscription was to resist Japan and save the country, which is beyond reproach. However, during that period, officials took advantage of the opportunity to commit suicide and engage in fraud. The "conscription" system became a platform for managers at all levels to prey on the people, get rich, or retaliate.  Rich children used money to buy connections before drawing lots, forged only-child certificates or tampered with household registers to avoid being drafted. Some wealthy households even used the names of public education personnel and students to convert draftees into exemptions or deferrals.  If you "win the lottery", you can bribe the township chief or the security chief, or even bribe the county military service department. You can only accept the name but not the job. Even if you accept the job, you will only be sent to the county department to serve as a soldier.

Since the poor people have no money or material bribes, once they win the lottery, they must report on time. If there is any delay, the township, town, and security teams will lead troops to arrest them.  When towns and villages come to arrest people, the winning families must entertain them with food and wine, and they dare not neglect them even a little bit.  After the strong men were caught, in order to prevent them from escaping, they were all tied up and imprisoned in groups of three or five, tied in a string, and guarded by spearmen in front and back, like prisoners.  In order to avoid military service, farmers often ran away, forming a "fleeing young man" that corresponded to "catching young men".

Townships, towns, and security chiefs often extort money from "winners" in the name of purchasing young men, ranging from dozens of silver dollars to hundreds of silver dollars.  Sometimes, in order to make up for the shortage of strong men, townships, towns, and security teams would arrest passers-by and even trackers on boats.  Those who are captured often take the places of the rich's children.  Over time, some handlers actually started a "war dealer" business, letting people go when they got money.

The strong men were escorted on the way, either by cart or boat, just like escorting pigs.

These strong men obtained by the 11th Division were all recruited from nearby Kaixian, Yunyang, Zhongxian, and Liangping. Some of them were children who were not yet eighteen years old. For the national army, which was in short supply of soldiers,  In other words, it can only be because there are too many radishes and the mud is not washed.

On the first day that Zhang Xian took over the fifty men, one of them escaped, but was captured by the guards. When Zhang Xian walked into the barracks, he saw squad leader Li Wenyi hanging the man in a hanging.  On the wooden stakes in the camp, he took off his shirt and whipped his body with a cowhide whip soaked in oil. In the warm and cold spring wind in March, this strong man was shivering, but he was ruthless.  The whip still fell on him again and again, his strong muscles bulging out, and there was a deep blood mark when the whip was struck, but he didn't even grunt.  This strong man was surrounded by dozens of other strong men in the platoon. They were all like lambs waiting to be slaughtered, watching everything in the field with sympathy and fear.

"Stop!" Zhang Xian shouted at the squad leader.

"Platoon leader, he ran away!" The squad leader thought Zhang Xian didn't know the reason and explained to him.

Zhang Xian waved his hand and said: "I know all this. Put him down!"

"Platoon leader!" The squad leader had something else to say.

"Li Wenyi! I order you now to put him down for me!" Zhang Xian was also angry and shouted word by word.

Li Wenyi was stunned for a moment, dropped the whip, turned around and left.  For him, he never understood why the company commander sent such a baby to be his boss.I will teach you everything. As long as you follow me and learn it well, it will definitely be useful to you. At least it will help you learn to protect yourself on the battlefield and not be hit by the enemy's stray bullets or die in vain.  "

¡°But, I¡¯ve never even killed a pig!¡± one of them shouted.

"So you must work hard and train now. On the battlefield, if you are soft on the enemy, you are being cruel to yourself."

"Platoon leader, you are a good person, much better than that squad leader Li!" Zhao Ergou said this.

Zhang Xian was startled for a moment, smiled, and said: "Actually, Squad Leader Li is also a good person. You may not understand it now, but you will understand in the future. He is a person who has really fought in the war. He is relatively strict with you, but  The more I make you sweat outside the battlefield, the less you will bleed on the battlefield."

"Anyway, I still think you are kinder than him," Zhao Ergou muttered, still prejudiced against Li Wenyi.

Zhang Xian didn¡¯t say anything more, comforted everyone a few more words, and then left.  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
