Ding Taoliang (williamalexanderparsonsmartin, 1827-1916), nicknamed Guanxi, was a native of Indiana, USA.  Born into a pastor's family, his father and brothers are both pastors.  In the 30th year of Daoguang reign (AD 1850), Ding Haoliang volunteered to join the overseas missionary mission of the Northern Presbyterian Church in the United States and was sent to Ningbo, China.  Later provided Taiping Rebellion intelligence to the U.S. government.  During the Second Opium War, he served as the translator for American Minister Levi Lian and participated in the drafting of the Sino-US Treaty of Tianjin.  In the first year of Tongzhi (AD 1862), he returned to China and soon came to China, where he established a church and opened a school in Beijing.  In 1863, Ding Haoliang began to translate "The Law of All Nations" by the American John Wheaton. The book was appreciated by Prince Gong and others, and the Prime Minister's Office allocated special funds to print and publish it.  In 1865, he was appointed as a teacher in Tongwen Hall.  In 1869, under the strong recommendation of General Director of Customs and Taxation Hurd, Ding Haoliang resigned from his teaching position at the Northern Presbyterian Church in the United States and became the chief teacher of the Tongwen Museum in Beijing until 1894.  During this period, he served as an advisor to the Qing government on international law.  In the eleventh year of Guangxu (AD 1885), he obtained the third-grade official title.  In 1898, the Capital University was established. Emperor Guangxu awarded Ding Haoliang the second rank title and appointed him as the first chief professor of the Capital University.  In 1902, the Qing government issued an order to restore the Capital University, and Ding Haoliang was reappointed as chief professor.  However, disputes arose among the Western teaching fellows over their demands for salary compensation from the Qing government. Zhang Baixi, the new Minister of Management and Education, dismissed Ding Haoliang and other Western teaching fellows collectively on the grounds of "shortage of funds."  Ding Haoliang died in Beijing on December 17, 1916, and was buried with his wife in a cemetery outside Xizhimen.

From 1850 to 1916, except for the 4 years in which he was not in China, Ding Haoliang lived in China for a total of 62 years. He was the leading "China expert" among foreigners in China in the late Qing Dynasty, and he was also a controversial historical figure:  On the one hand, he actively promoted Christianity, hated the Boxer Rebellion, and advocated the division of spheres of influence among the great powers, "using China to control China" and the separatist rule of Hainan Island by the United States to strengthen the enslavement of China; on the other hand, he has been engaged in practical work in translation and education for many years, and has served as a long-term  As the person in charge of China's famous educational institutions, Beijing Tongwen Museum and Capital University (the predecessor of Peking University), he unintentionally played an important role in the brewing and formation of modern education in China.  For the first time, he formally and comprehensively introduced international law works to China.

There is a historical scene that is still thought-provoking: in 1898, when China¡¯s first university, Capital University (today¡¯s Peking University), was established, Ding Haoliang was appointed by Emperor Guangxu as the first chief professor (i.e. president) and awarded the second grade.  At the beginning of the school year, he bowed to the Chinese sage Confucius in front of all Chinese and foreign guests.  This move made Ding Nailiang regarded as a traitor to God by some Christians, but it was precisely because of this that he integrated into China in this way and became a member of Chinese education.  (The above is adapted from "Baidu Encyclopedia".)

Of course, Sun Yuanqi had no idea about these glorious achievements of Ding Haoliang.  This is no wonder, after all, these things in the history of education are too far away from graduate students in the physics department.  When I was studying pedagogy, I might have mentioned it once or twice, but who would pay attention to this?  It's not a test center.

Sun Yuanqi was wearing a long gown, leather shoes, and fake pigtails, walking awkwardly on the dusty streets. Looking around, he felt that the street scene at the root of the imperial city was not as good as a small town in the 21st century.  When people around him saw him, they also smacked their eyes:

"Hey! This tall man is so handsome, so fair!"

"Hey, the shoes under the gown are weird!"

When we arrived at the entrance of Ding Haoliang's mansion, it was almost eleven o'clock.  It is estimated that not many people come to Ding Hailiang's house on weekdays, so when the disciple saw Sun Yuanqi, he looked at him a few more times and asked, "What do you do for me, sir?"

Sun Yuanqi thought to himself, does this old man Ding remember that he came to the door rashly after he had made two excuses? What kind of "noble thing" can he do?  At that moment, he said bravely: "I am a teacher recommended by the American Minister Mr. Conger, and I am here to pay a visit to Mr. Ding."

"Is there a greeting card?" asked the disciple.

Sun Yuanqi shook his head and said: "No. - You tell Mr. Ding, the physics teacher you met yesterday, he will definitely understand."

The disciple didn¡¯t make things difficult for him, he turned around and ran in to report the matter.  After a while, a bright-faced and energetic Ding Haoliang came out and said, "Oh God, look who's coming. Please come in quickly. Please come in quickly."

Sun Yuanqi hurried up to greet him. He originally wanted to shake hands, but Ding Haoliang opened his arms and gave him a solid hug.  Then, Ding Hailiang took a step back and looked at Sun Yuanqi carefully: "Look, look, this guy, this appearance, this temperament, I haven't seen such an energetic young man for a long time since I left the United States."

Just when he was about to say a few words of humility, Ding Haoliang took his hand and walked into the room: "Did you know? Chinese children are so energetic, but after entering school, they become like old pedants.??Tailiang presented another ten taels of silver and asked for Sun Yuanqi's address, saying that he would actively communicate with Chongshi Middle School and would inform him as soon as there was news.  Sun Yuanqi thanked him profusely and just left.

With ten taels of silver and seven pieces of eagle ocean on him, Sun Yuanqi gained some confidence and felt that if he saved a little money, he should be fine in a month or two.  Only a month or two later, Sun Yuanqi comforted himself: At that time, one of Chongshi Middle School and Capital University would be open!

On the way, I bought some cooked food and four white flour buns for dinner. I also bought a bottle of wine, but it was for Lao Tong, thanking him for his help today.  Then walked back slowly.

When we arrived at the Horse Temple, the setting sun was already on the treetops.  Old Tong was sitting on the threshold to enjoy the cool air. When he saw him coming back, he stood up with a smile and said hello: "Mr. Sun, you are back."

Sun Yuanqi now felt that the old man was not bad, so he smiled and said, "Come back. Are you taking advantage of the cool weather?"

"The room is very stuffy. The draft at the entrance of the temple is beautiful! Would you like to sit down for a while?" Lao Tong invited.

At this time, Sun Yuanqi felt that wearing a long gown was quite uncomfortable, and he was sweating all over. He wanted to go back to the house and take a shower first: "I'd better go back and take a shower first. By the way, I bought cooked food, and we'll have dinner together later." He said.  After finishing, he raised the wine, meat and steamed buns in his hands.

The old man smiled sheepishly, and then replied: "Okay! I've bought all the things you mentioned, and I still have 830 yuan left, so I'll send them to you in a while."

Although the yard was only "taken over" yesterday, in Sun Yuanqi's heart, it is a "home".  The moment you step into the courtyard, you feel as safe as returning home.  After entering the yard, I first hung the cooked food and steamed buns on the branches. The wine bottle was made of pottery and was placed on the roots of the willow tree to avoid falling.  After entering the house, he put away his money first, then put his schoolbag on the bed and took off his gown and trousers.

I fetched a bucket of cold water from the well and took a forced bath with the rag.  Then I rinsed my trousers and gown in a bucket, wrung them dry and hung them on a tree. I thought they would be dry tomorrow morning, so I wouldn¡¯t delay wearing them.  Then, he carried a bucket of water to the west wing, took off his pants and washed them - even if there was no one around, it was always indecent to be naked in the atrium.  After washing, I put my pants back on.  I have no choice but to give up a pair of pants!

There are a few flat stones under the willow tree in the courtyard, which are originally used to enjoy the shade in summer.  Because no one had lived there for a long time, there was half a finger's worth of loess on it.  Sun Yuan first swept it with a broken broom, then rinsed it with water, and it was immediately clean.  Just when I was about to sit on it and take a breath, Lao Tong came in carrying a big bag on his back.

Perhaps due to the influence of Sun Yuanqi, or perhaps the custom of the Qing Dynasty, Lao Tong wore deep-crotch trousers, like two pockets on the body, tied around the waist with a cloth belt, and the trouser legs were tied with small strips of cloth  Tight, totally modern hip-hop outfit.  A pair of cloth shoes were casually hanging on his feet.  Sun Yuanqi went up to meet him, helped move the bag under the willow tree, and prepared to pack up for dinner.

Old Tong stretched out his hand to stop us and said, "Don't be in a hurry to eat. Just have some light first, and then we'll finish counting everything!"

Sun Yuanqi said: "I can rest assured that you will do the work."

But the old man was not happy: "'Brothers, let's settle the score clearly.' I, old Tong, can do it openly!"

Sun Yuanqi could only follow his wishes, and took out things one by one under the setting sun: a washbasin, towels, pants, candles, soap, bowls, chopsticks Finally, he took out a sickle-shaped iron thing.

Sun Yuanqi picked it up, looked at it for a long time, and asked, "What is this?"

"It's a fire sickle!" Old Tong glanced at it and replied casually.

"" Sun Yuanqi was speechless. Who knows how to use this?  After a while, he asked cautiously, "Are there any matches to buy here? The kind that light up with just one stroke."

"Matches? Those are foreign things. By the way, the toothtooth scraper you mentioned, no one on the street knew what it was, so they didn't buy it." After saying that, he took out a bunch of money from his body, "This is the leftover  Please count the eight hundred and thirty coins I placed."

"Take it. I'll think about it tonight to see what's missing, and I'll go out with you to buy some tomorrow." Sun Yuanqi pushed the money back, stood up, and brought over the meat and wine, the newly bought chopsticks, and bowls  Just right for the purpose.

Old Tong hung the money on his waist and said, "Okay! Let's go tomorrow." He was not polite, picked up the wine bowl and took a big sip.

When the crescent moon comes up, the whole courtyard will be clear.  Lao Tong was so drunk that he went back staggeringly.  Sun Yuanqi put away the dishes, lay down on a stone, looked at the brilliant stars in the night sky, and began to plan his future life:

Tomorrow, I will go out to buy some things. Some of the things Lao Tong bought are not very suitable, such as pants, which have no elastic bands and need to be tied with cloth tape; another example is the fire sickle, which needs to be beaten to make sparks come out.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????? off out to talk with Ding Yuliang, today is June 29th, the 24th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu, August 16th, 1898 in the Western calendar. I don't know how many days are left in the "Hundred Days Reform".  Someone is going to kill people in Caishikou!

If you plan to teach, you need to prepare teaching materials now, and you have to write the teaching materials yourself.  In this case, you have to prepare paper and pen. Even if you don't have a writing brush or rice paper, you won't be able to use it if you have it. You should go to a foreign store to buy pens and ink. If you don't have a pen, you have to use a quill.

By the way, let¡¯s write a few more papers to earn some royalties and support our family.  Hi, I don¡¯t know if that paper has been sent out?
